Eclectic Bridesmaid Dresses

Good grief, these are just the prettiest things! I had to share this etsy shop I stumbled across.
How amazing! All different but they look so pretty together. I like how in the photo above they used the same style of boot and bouquets to tie them all together. Visit this shop: sohomode

So cute and wouldn't they be great for a spring or summer wedding?!

Do you have time for hobbies?

Well see my hobby has turned into a full blown business (which I love and am completely grateful for!) But sometimes, I miss making something by hand, just to make it, out of nothingness, from start to finish, with no other creative persuasion but my own!

I am blessed to work with so many lovely customers and brides, but the nature of the majority of that work is custom (which is super fun and challenging sometimes!). So you get what I'm saying? I just every now and again want to create something out of my head with no direction.... until I'm happy I've produced something pretty. That's all.

You may want to sneak a peek over at my baby shop for some of my latest creations (I'm considering this my new 'hobby') ♥

Decorating for a Pink & Proper Bachelorette

Yeah, by proper, I mean no peckers! I'm just not that kind of girl. I'm aiming for more of a pretty and classy bachelorette party. I'm in the process right now of gathering some decorations and plans for my little sister's bachelorette party, and although the one I am planning will have a yellow and gray theme, I couldn't help but get lost in the sea of pink decorations that are available for such an event.
I wanted to share these gorgeous HANDMADE finds from Etsy.

From left to right:
Corset Invitation from Embellished by Tiffany
Striped (do-it-yourself) Printable Favor box by The Posh Event (PS: I love this shop, I've purchased here before, they're awesome!)
Engagement ring punches in black and pink by Little Speedster (You could use these as confetti on tables and such)
Bridal party sash by Have2HaveIT (I actually already placed my order for one of these!)
Cupcake Bath Bombs by Simply Tempted (These would be cute done up in gift bags for the attendees, along with other smelly, girly stuff that we can never have enough of)
'Love is Sweet' cupcake toppers by Vintage Twee

Craft Count...how cool is this?

My fellow etsiers, do you know about this site? Craftcount.com? It tells you the top Etsy Sellers by country and/or category. This is an easy way to check on the best, see their shops and be inspired! I know I certainly get the bug to work harder when I see what opportunity there can be when you love what you do and work hard!

I've been looking up to many of these big names in the 'Bags and Purses' category for years now and I am ecstatic to announce that yours truly, is in the top list on craftcount's
bags and purses list! Ranking in at number 76 in the world and number 8 in Canada! Yay! OK, I realize it's a pretty high climb to the top there (many more seams to sew), but the point is, my name is there! So cool, right?
I need to spend more time at the sewing machine!

LouLouBell on the Front Page!

Here I am! Right here in the bottom left hand corner! I remember a time when it wasn't so rare to see your stuff on the front page of etsy, but since becoming a registered user many years ago, Etsy has grown by leaps and bounds! So seeing your items right there on the landing page is an exciting thing! Just last month alone there were 1,258,023 items sold on etsy, and 239,340 new members! Just in one month!

Classic Wedding

One of my favorite parts of being a small business owner is getting to work directly with my customers. I have had the honor of putting together many orders for brides over the past years, and it is always so nice to help design a custom order and be a little part of their big day.

This is my latest custom order for an upcoming wedding. The bride is going with black, gold and cream as her colors. I had such a great time designing with this color scheme. Classy! I'm sure her big day will be just gorgeous!
Congratulations Jessica!

This was her inspiration image. Source unknown.

And these were what I came up with to match her vision.

These little flowers include vintage buttons from my Nan's button jar.

Glass beads give these flowers a little shimmer...

iPad Cases in the shop!

I had a customer recently order a custom case for her Kobo eReader. It's kind of like the Kindle, small, lightweight, and millions and zillions of books in the palm of your hand! She came out to pick it up and I saw her reader and now have not stopped thinking about how badly I want one of my own! So I had drafted a pattern for her case, so I thought I would use it to produce some more cases for the shop, and I also added a larger version to accommodate the iPad. This was a great idea from a customer! I am always open to hearing new ideas and trying new things, it keeps me on my toes and helps to develop my line (when there's time for trying new things!) I'll be listing more cases in the weeks to come, stay tuned!

Next in the Baby Collection

Remember I said I'd post my next project? Here it is - the Reversible Denim Infant Jacket.
I use denim as the lining for many of my bags, the color hides dirt from scuffs and it's sturdy and holds up to wear and tear. So what better fabric to use for a jacket? This denim in particular is super soft.

I have it listed at LouLouBell Baby and will be hoping to add others soon. I'm waiting for a ginormous order of some really great children's fabrics, so lots of new ones on the way!

Etsy Milestone + Giveaway!!

Well friends, today is a very big day for me! Back in 2007 I began listing my little sewing creations online at our favorite handmade market place, Etsy..... today I officially passed the 1000 sales mark in my LouLouBell shop! Yippee! I won't lie, I'm feeling pretty happy. I absolutely LOVE what I do, sewing and creating - and to have other people enjoy my work too means a great deal to me. Etsy has been such a great venue for me, an awesome community. I love that I can share my work with people all over the world, and my little bags have travelled to places I didn't even know existed! And I love that I in turn can support other artists and mompreneurs! Thanks Etsy! I want to thank all of my customers over the years for your support and business.

In celebration, I want to offer a giveaway of any of the hairpin sets listed in my shop! I want to hear from you - all you have to do is drop me a line, say hello, tell me why you love Etsy, tweet me, follow my blog - you know the drill - the more you do, the more entries you get!

I'll choose a random winner in a week's time! Thanks again to my lovely customers and Etsians for all your support!

Weekend Market

Well, back from the market... it wasn't the busiest of weekends, but I had a ton of fun, nonetheless. I especially like the opportunity to catch up with my market friends, fellow crafters, and get to know the other vendors better and trade crafty stories and tips!

I was happily surprised to see that Sonia of Third Street and Susan of The Silver Hook were wearing my chiffon flowers in their hair! They bashfully let me snap these quick photos (sorry, not the best quality, I was using my phone, which I still can't focus properly...) Thanks ladies!

These little baby balls I started to make when I was going through all my fabric scraps and needed to find a way to put those little scraps to good use!

Lavender filled Matryoshka dolls, smell so pretty and fresh!

Spring Dresses for your Wee one

Finally listed some more infant dresses in my baby shop! It's been slow going, I've been busy with wholesale orders, which is wonderful! Thank you to all my new customers (check out new vendors list on my website!) In between filling orders, and trying to stock up for shows, it's been a challenge to keep my etsy shops stocked, but I've just spent some time catching up while my wonderful husband volunteered to spend the day with our little monster..... I love having Taylor in the studio with me, he provides entertainment by way of dancing to the radio (he isn't yet walking, but he sure can bee-bop for an 11-month old!) However, Taylor has recently discovered the plug to my sewing machine, so him yanking it out of the wall whilst I am mid-seam isn't working out! : )

Speaking of shows, please come out and visit the Halifax Forum Annex this Saturday, May 8th, in support of a great cause, Feed Nova Scotia! Hope to see you there!

Etsy Front Page!

Yay! One of my
Gracious Paper poms was recently featured on the front page of Etsy!
Dang, I missed it - but thank heavens for Craft Cult! If you're an etsy seller and not currently using this site, it is a handy dandy thing! Here is a screen shot and thanks to Trendie Treasures for picking my pom to use in her treasury list!

Support for Children of Haiti

I had given some thought to how such great tragedies in our world often get so much exposure in the media for a small time and experience an outpouring of generosity. The fundraising efforts for Haiti were astonishing, but we rarely hear anything about it in the news these days. There are still many children suffering or alone, who have lost their families. It may be a small effort, but every tiny bit of support adds up. I've dedicated a section in my etsy shop to helping, to do what I can, 50 percent of the sales from this section I will be donating to the Canadian Red Cross. Please visit www.redcross.ca to learn about relief efforts and other causes that are in need of help. I am blessed in my life, I have shelter over my head, I am warm, I am not hungry, and I know where my family is. This I don't want to take for granted. Please if there is anything small you can do, the smallest efforts will have large impact together.

My niece inspired me.....

Always busy.....if I could just turn this creative itch off!
So this weekend past, I hosted a baby shower, in honor of my little sister who is expecting her first baby, a little girl! We are all so excited to meet our little niece, I'm so excited to be an aunt!

So first I was gathering a basket of gifts for this little bundle, and I wanted to get her a special little dress, but then I thought - "Hey, I can sew! Maybe I'll try making her a dress!" Yes, that's what I did.... I drafted a pattern, and made my first dress! And I had so much fun, that I made another, and well before I knew it, I had a closet full of small dresses! Soooooo........ louloubellbaby.etsy.com was born! I haven't listed them all yet, but will be trying to get around to that soon....

And then I had to decorate for the shower and I needed to find an affordable, but different idea for my sister's special day when I came upon a stash of tissue paper in my studio. So I made a pom and then another and another! They went over really well, and I was super pleased with the overall look they gave to the room for the shower. I bought alot of my other details for the shower on etsy. I tend to do a lot of shopping online, especially now with a 10 month old, it's just so much easier to have things delivered to my front door, rather than tote him around all over the city looking for the perfect touches. So then I had a thought that I could help other moms to be a perfect host for their parties and so graciouspaper.etsy.com was born!

Poms aren't hard to make, it's the time it takes that is valuable. And I stock 19 different colors which helps so you can customize them to match your event.... great for wedding receptions, baby showers, bachelorette parties or nursery decor! They are folded, tied and hand trimmed and come to you ready to unfluff into perfect paper flowers and include monofilament for hanging......

Yes, I'm dabbling a little all over the place, but I like to keep the shops neat and tidy, so by opening different shops I can keep everything in its place....

Get to Know + Giveaway: Maramiki

Meet my latest fabric crush, Maramiki!
Maramiki is the creation of designer and textile artist, Mara Snipes. I am so thrilled to be hosting this AWESOME giveaway - I'm holding a stack of her remnant fabrics and it is simply gorgeous - super soft and would make some really sweet creations. One of you lucky readers is going to win this beautiful little stack to add to your sewing stash!

I came across Maramiki on etsy, and was very excited when Mara agreed to give us a little insight into her creative life. Have a read, be inspired, and don't forget to leave us a comment - say hello and let us know your favorite item from her shop......

Where are you from, in which city do you currently live?

I was raised in Chicago, and am back in Chicago again by way of a glorious nine-year stint in San Francisco.

How did you become interested in your craft?

I've been drawing since I can remember, little pictures with lots of detail, which is how I see things... up close, with attention to line.  I had wanted to start a creative business for years, but couldn't quite narrow down what I wanted to do.  So I decided to find something to start with, and then go from there.  That was such a liberating moment, to just dive in and see what unfolds.  I also wanted to find a way to make my drawings 'functional'... to have them inhabit everyday, useful objects. I love fabric and texture, so I took a textile screenprinting class last year, and then it clicked.  So I guess I consider myself first a draftsperson, who found a medium in screenprinting and textiles.

Do you sell on Etsy full time or do you have a day job?

I sell on Etsy, but also sell to a few local stores in Chicago.  My website launched last year, which has been a great marketing tool and I've gotten a lot of custom work from it.  After taking a few months off to have a baby recently, it hit home that I get back what I put into it, so it's an ongoing commitment to keep looking, drawing, designing, and pushing the envelope creatively.  When I get frustrated or stuck, I remind myself that I chose this: I left the corporate world to slow down my lifestyle and do something more personally fulfilling.  It comes with its own challenges but it was the best decision for me.

Where do you get your inspiration?

I think everything influences me to some extent, but nature is my biggest inspiration - getting outside and really paying attention to what's there. I keep a sketchbook with me all the time, and try to get ideas down as they come to me.  I also draw a lot with my daughters (ages three and four and a half), and the things they come up with blow me away!  It's so easy for children - there's no judgment, which lets things flow much more easily.  I don't try too hard to identify where designs or ideas come from, but I stay open to being moved or affected by things in my daily life: the light, air, weather, color.  That feeling of openness is in itself very inspiring.

Where do you do your crafty work?

I have a studio in my home, with lots of floorspace, good light, and storage for all of my drawings, samples, fabric, crazy projects, and on and on.  It's pretty organized at the moment but it makes me happy to have the floor covered with scraps and trimmings - it means I've been working.

Thanks to Mara for sharing with us!
And don't forget to leave us a comment to enter!
A winner will be chosen at random on October 23rd -  Extra entries will be given for blogger followers and tweeters!

**THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED - Congratulations to our winner Shellie of This Little Family!
